2005 update

up to end March

max156On the 20th Jan Andy Little and Max Cottis came out to do an article for the Anglers Mail on winter carp fishing. On their first day, together with my son, they had 18 catfish up to 118lb but only 2 carp up to 28lb. The weekend ended up with a total of 35 cats including 7 tons up to 124lb and 8 carp to 28lb. In the first week of Feb three lads from Bicester had 23 cats with 11 over a ton the best being 136lb and about 35 carp including 7 30's with a best of 38lb 4oz. Not a bad start to the year when the water temp was only 3-5 degrees. As the water temperature started to rise through March and onwards the fishing just got better and better. March saw 28 anglers share 128 catfish of which 52 were ton+, which included Justin McDonald, brother and father all striking into fish and playing ton+ fish together, and Colin Hall who had 5 tons on the trot one evening, awesome. On 31st March we had our most productive day so far, just six anglers shared 40 cats with seven over 100lb. Total weight just over 2,400lb and all of these in an eight hour daylight session. This has been our best start to a year by far, in fact on the 2nd April we had our hundredth hundred of the year not bad going for only seven and a half weeks We are now onto our fourth tonne of pellets this year and our investment in pre-baiting in certain areas is now starting to pay off. Most days are producing 100lb plus cats and we have had two days where we have landed ten or more.

April and May

The second week of April saw us break nearly all of our previous records, 7 anglers shared 207 cats with a massive 64 ton+ cats. During this week Max Cottis , Cheryl (his wife) and Danny (her son) fished for five days and caught 78 cats with 39 ton+ up to 156lb, while Guy Baxendale and his two mates fishing DIY had 28 cats up to 142lb in one day, a great effort lads. The month totals for April ended up at 22 anglers with 604 cats including 141 tons. If you speak to most of the German guides they will tell you not to bother with May because the cats are spawning, just ask Mark Simmonds if its worth coming out, he fished for three weeks and had 84 cats for his trouble. In fact this May has been our best monthly total ever with 28 anglers catching 681 cats including 69 tons.I heard that the fishing on most of the Ebro was very slow this year but our fishing just kept getting better. In the last nine weeks up to end May we have had 50 anglers catching over 1200 cats with 200 over 100lb and up to 156lb. The total for these two months alone is more than we caught during the whole of 2004. We have a new best week ever, 7 anglers, 207 cats, 64 over 100lb and a total weight of 16,062lb Best day ever is now 43 cats with 13 over 100lb Our running total for this year up to 31st May stands at 1502 catfish with 290 over 100lb.

We’ve had a possible world record catch for a group of three anglers. In five days Max Cottis, his wife and son caught 78 cats of which 39 were 100lbers . We only fish daylight sessions of 8-9 hours so the maximum fishing they could have had was 45 hours, if you’ve heard of anyone doing better in such a short amount of time please let us know.

June and July

June and the drought here in Spain is starting to bite, the water level dropped 14ft in four weeks and by the end of the month the level was down to the original river bank. This has made landing fish some what messy in a few swims with mud up past your knees. Ron Woodward brought a group of his clients out and his wife only goes and nobbles a 168lb cat the biggest I know of for certain from the top lake. Steve Roode from Cyprus stayed for two weeks, and fished mainly with my son Jonny (Teenage Ebro Ace? That reminds me I’ve got to have words with the Anglers Mail about that) and managed 110 cats including 16 tons. Our total for June was 32 anglers 495 cats including 65 tons. We normally start to slow down in July, not because the fishing drops off, but more I think because the wife or girlfriend wants a holiday and that means not just sun, but sea and sand. My old mate Dominic Moore came out for a week with Steve Bown and their girlfriends. They only fished four days because on day three they had 30 cats and needed a day off .Then on day five they started off with Jonny as I had to wait for some new guests to arrive. When I got to the swim at 4.05 they only had one rod out and the other five waiting to be re-baited, they could have two rods each but had not managed to get six out all day. Their tally for the first five hours was 25 cats, in the next 4 hours we had another 29 cats with five together at one stage, in all they had 54 cats with a total weight of 3144lb, they took the next day off. The total for the week was 6 anglers 244 cats including 35 tons and a total weight of 16167lb.

Our running total up to end of July 2494 catfish including 440 hundred pounders

How about this for an action shot, Dom had just let a fish go whilst paula and Lucy were playing fish. Then off goes another and steve is in, so Dom goes to get his camera to take a shot of the three of them into fish and you guessed it off goes another. Dom with camera in hand tells jonny (guide) to take the fish, as he was about to shoot some photos, another rod behind him went off right next to me (other guide) but as he was busy photographing his mates told me to take it, so now we have five cats on together totally awesome.

August

We closed for holidays during the first three weeks of of August. When we returned the river was so low we could not launch our big boats and our baited areas were not fishable so we had to bait up new ones. The fishing was slow for the first couple of days but the five lads ended the week with 69 cats inc 14 ton ups.

When we returned after our summer break the water was so low we could not launch the 21ft dories The picture here was taken below Chiprana

September and October

This autumn has been totally awesome after our success in the spring we were booked solid for September and October even putting an over spill into local B&Bs to cope with demand, I must admit I was a little bit worried that the number of rods in the area would have an adverse effect on the fishing, but I needn’t have worried in in those two months we caught 2134 catfish inc 608 ton up cats.

The launch at Chiprana left high and dry

A few feats worth a mention on Tuesday 25th October Kevin Fenlon caught Catfish Capers 1,000th ton up catfish of the year. Max and his wife were out again on their last day they had fifteen ton ups. Gwyn Davies on his first day he caught 10 catfish 7 ton up cats to 115lb and an average weight of 101lb, 16 year old Kristian Tardi for a brace of 140’s, Danny Duncan 156lb, John Dent 158lb, Jos Bergervoet 160lb, Mark Aggio 160lb, Cliff Oselton 162lb and Pat Sweeney 166lb, well done chaps.

Some of the snags in front of base camp

November and December

November started well with a group of four from Sweden catching 76 cats 22 ton ups. Over the next two weeks we had the catfish Society, a group from Angling Direct Holidays and one from Peterborough they caught 216 cats inc 81 ton ups. Unfortunately from this point on our bookings started to drop off but the fishing did not. Nigel Westons group were let down by Catfish Concept with no notice, I received a phone call on the Tuesday evening and had Duane pick them up at Reus airport Wednesday morning, to read how they got on visit http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/authors/nigel01.htm. Our year finished off with Andy Little and Max Cottis (yes him again) popping over for four days to do a xmas article for the Anglers Mail. Over the four days they caught 42 cats inc 13 ton ups. When I went home at the end of October for my family holiday the river was at the lowest I have ever seen it about 50ft down from the spring level, by the time we said fair well to our final customers in mid December it had filled up, and whilst some days were difficult we did not loose any days fishing and caught every single day.
