2007 update

The last clients of the year really cleaned up and managed to flush out a few biggies as well. Two anglers form Hertfordshire Chris Cowell and Stephen Wiles, later joined by the two Pats.

xmasdo 02122nd Dec and one had the luck of the devil Chris 7 cats 20, 30, 35, 40, 65, 75 and 96 whilst his mate??? Steve started with a 40, then 164, 123, 129, 138, 133 and 136. How unlucky was Chris considering they were taking alternate fish. Not a bad day total 14 cats 6 ton ups for 1224lb. Whilst retrieving one of the rods it all went heavy thinking it was a snag I pulled like mad only for a tail to pop up, I had foul hooked the 164 in the tail poor thing.

23rd and things have evened out today Steve started with a 127 his seventh ton on the trot along with 40, 65 and another 127 Chris replied with a hard fighting 74 then his first ton up 134 and a 122. Total for day 7 cats inc 4 ton ups total weight 689.

24th all very even Chris 15, 20, 74 and 102 and Steve 30, 40, 55 and 112 so a daily total 8 cats 2 ton ups for 448lb ps one of the cats looked like it had thrown up the swim bladder of a carp but when I looked closer it was a condom, yuck.

Steve 139lbLater in the evening we bumped into two lads both named Pat who were out with Gary Sheridan. They came into “La Zona” bar at 10.30 looking for food as the hotel had closed and the chef in the bar also said it was not possible for food here either, I said I had some curries in the freezer if they didn't mind waiting for it to defrost. They then told us that Gary’s car had broken down (no brakes) but still dropped off his other clients by using the engine as a brake. This had left the two Pats with the option of fishing near Caspe which has white water rapids at the moment or going home. After hearing accounts of Chris and Steve’s catches they asked if they could follow along and just watch the next day, I said it was ok with me but they would have to ask my clients who not only said yes but insisted they fished as well. So I asked them if they had their licences, they said no, I asked if they had supplied copies of their passports for the licences to be obtained they said no, guess they weren‘t going to get any then. Any way to cut a long story short I got them licences the next morning and they went fishing.

steve 150lb a28th Steve has a 150, 128, 122 and 88 and Chris 17, 87, 124 and 124 whilst the two Pats fished a 100 yards or so down stream and had 68, 102 and 156.

Don Wheeler set a new mark for us all to chase with 3 160s in a week a 162, 165 and 168lb not bad for a 73-year old. He says he wants to be our first centurion to catch a ton up catfish, I wish him luck. Well I’ve got some photos but in the mean time he’s returned and had another 161lb. That’s 4 for the year

8th Jan saw Mark Barrett grace the banks of the Ebro to try his hand at Zander fishing and do a write up for the Pike and Predators magazine. Whilst he did not have any of the big girls, he did have lots of smaller ones and enjoyed himself enough to want to do a return trip this autumn.

If you would like to fish with Mark this autumn please contact me for further details

Family’s ‘reely’ good holiday fun

Reeling in personal best catches a family holiday for a Lowestoft family has led to a record-breaking treble success.

For keen anglers John and Suzanne Bonsall and their 12-year old son Jake Fisher landed 84catfish between them- with 29 specimens weighing more than a massive 100lb- while on holiday in Spain

Lothingland Middle School Jake, mum Suzanne and stepdad John all heaved in their best-ever catches during their trip, which was booked and organised through www.catfishcapers.co.uk

Jake, who only started fishing two years ago, landed a 138lb catfish- slightly larger in size than his previous best catch, which was a 12lb carp.

Suzanne took pride of place however in the battle to land top weight. For the 41-year old beauty therapist and care worker for Mencap reeled in a monster 164lb catfish, which broke the Catfish Capers record for 2007.

Meanwhile, 54-year old husband John, who is also a care worker for Mencap reeled in a 145lb catfish

In total, the family from Blundeston ended up with a staggering 6,166lb of catfish, with catches ranging from 12lb to 164lb.

The family regularly fish on the broads, at Burgh Castle and Reedham Ferry - but this was a trip they’ll never forget.

“The catches were just incredible - we thought the maximum weight we’d catch would be 50lb or 60lb if we were lucky,” said Mrs Bonsall
