A big thank you to Max Cottis of Fox for supplying some of their products for field testing, Max came out with us four times in 2005 fishing a total of 18 days during which time he has caught 41 ton ups. This hasn’t happened by chance he is one of the hardest working anglers I’ve had the pleasure of fishing with, having a production line of quick link rigs already rebaited and waiting to be cast back out in the minimum amount of time making sure the line is in the water not on the bank

Bank rods Fox 12ft 4.75lb Pellet Master

For our bank fishing and to compliment the rod we have introduced the Shimano BTR6500B as a very robust fixed spool baitrunner loaded with 80lb Fox torque braid.

Our complete bank set up comprises Fox 12ft 4.75lb rods Shimano BTR6500B baitrunner reels, the Fox A Pod with Micron M alarms and Fox Mk 2 swingers

The Fox Silure X Range

6 ft clonking rod                                            Although we do not clonk very often, we found this rod very capable of subduing cats of over 100lb when fishing directly under the boat

6 ft 10 in boat rod                                           My favoured rod when fishing from the boat, it has a nice through action and plenty of power to land some of the larger cats very quickly

8 ft boat/bank rod 2 piece                                    This slightly longer rod is ideal for striking home the hook when float fishing at long distances 200-275m. It’s fine for bank fishing over gentle slopes but not long enough for some the sharp deep drop-offs we have on the Ebro

10 ft bank rod 2 piece                                Very nice rod, my first fish on them went 132lb and it was a real scrapper close in, most impressed with the power of the rod, left a huge bruise in my groin.

All the feedback we’ve had on these rods from our clients has been very positive, we have only had one breakage and that was the spigot not the blank itself. We would strongly recommend the range to anyone looking for a new rod

For our boat fishing we are currently using the Penn 225LD multiplier reel with lever drag. We have found these to be very reliable even with our high usage. Earlier reels with line lay did not last more than six-eight weeks

Our main line and trace material is 70kg dyneema

We use Cureau floats of 150, 300, 400 and 500g, depending on the size of live bait.

These floats are quite expensive, but very well made and worth every penny

Available from Andy Lush at The Friendly Fisherman

Example of our live bait rig.

We use sharpened duo-clips to secure the live bait in a hair rig fashion with a large eagle wave single near to the anal fin and a 5/0 Owner treble below the head. I have not had one single client disagree when I say that “the Owner trebles are the best you will ever use”.
